The trend for European jurisdictions to bring hedge funds onshore could herald dramatic changes in the industry's client base. "The net result of the regulatory trend is to increase access for all classes of investor" says Stephen Smith, head of funds and alternative solutions within the asset management division of Credit Suisse. "Hedge funds are increasingly preserve of, on the one hand, institutional investors, and on the other, the mass affluent."

12th Dec 2006 Hedge funds' retail push raises spectre of compensation claims
LONDON (Thomson IM) - Hedge funds will face a significant increase in regulatory exposure as well as the prospect of major compensation claims if they open up to retail investors, according to Robert Kelly of Baronsmead Insurance Brokers, a provider of insurance to hedge funds. Kelly told Thomson Investment Management News: “Hedge funds which open to retail investors will face stricter operational and liquidity requirements and more prescriptive regulation.”
